HSV 554 - Multicultural Issues in Counseling and Human Services


3 Credits

This course prepares counseling students to work with diverse and marginalized clients. Key concepts covered in this course include multicultural counseling and therapy theories and interventions, cultural competence, social justice and advocacy, racial, ethnic and cultural identity (REC), and their influence on the delivery of counseling services to culturally diverse and marginalized communities. Additionally, this course explores the unique challenges and group differences of several socially marginalized groups, such as Native Americans, African Americans, multiracial populations, Arab Americans, Immigrants, as well as individuals living in poverty, LGBTQ populations and other multicultural populations. Throughout this course, students will self-reflect to identify bias, microaggressions and to facilitate development of cultural awareness and competence.
