CHS 495 - Field Experience Capstone 3 Credits
This culminating course for the Bachelor of Science in Child Studies provides an opportunity to reinforce and expand on the knowledge, competencies, and skills developed throughout the degree program with attention to each of the six Early Childhood Education Higher Education Standards (NAEYC, 2021). This course includes a seminar and 100 hours of supervised fieldwork in an approved, self-selected, early childhood setting. Students will help plan, organize, and implement daily routines and activities and work as a team in partnership with families and teachers. Some topics included in the seminar portion of the course are physical, cognitive, language and literacy, psychosocial development, advancing equity, supporting diverse populations, building family and community relationships, exploring trends in the field, the transmission of values, collaborating with colleagues, and applying professional standards of ethical conduct. This course is an alternative to CHS495V Simulated Field Experience Capstone; students may earn credit for either CHS495 or CHS495V but not both.
Please note: The requirement for criminal background checks and fingerprinting is at the sole discretion of the Capstone practicum site, following local, state, and federal law. Students are responsible for understanding and meeting any such requirements and possible fees that might be required. Prerequisites: All other required Child Studies courses, a minimum of a 2.50 GPA, and approval of Capstone site and supervision arrangements.
