N 521 - Advanced Pharmacology

This course focuses on the theoretical background and the principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics of prescribed and over-the-counter drugs and natural products commonly used in the advanced practice nurse's management of acute and chronic illnesses, and in the general well-being of persons throughout the lifespan. Students will learn to employ therapeutic decision-making in drug selection and evaluation during patient care within the context of knowledge concerning pathophysiology and current pharmacological research. Additionally, students will monitor and assess the effectiveness of drug therapy and formulate clinical care and teaching plans for persons from diverse populations regarding the safe and effective use of drugs and natural products. This course reviews patient education, and legal, ethical, and economic issues.
