The Master of Science in Nursing - Nursing Informatics Specialization provides experienced nurses with the opportunity to build skills and insights for the management and use of healthcare information systems for better outcomes. This specialization explores informatics essentials-such as data management, data mining, clinical and administrative systems, and information systems-to improve patient care and maintain system integrity. Coursework covers healthcare analytics, information security, data analytics, and more.

This is a post-licensure nursing program. Students must maintain an active and unencumbered registered nurse license throughout their enrollment.

This program is not designed to fulfill the educational requirements for any licensure or certification. Post University does not speak on behalf of any licensing board or body but does assist students in understanding licensure requirements.

The Master of Science in Nursing - Nursing Informatics Specialization is offered in two different modalities (methods of delivery): term based and SIMPath (competency based). The learning outcomes, program specializations, and level of difficulty are the same for both modalities. The term based modality allows students to take courses in a traditional format. The SIMPath modality is a competency based approach that allows students to move through each course at their own pace, demonstrating a mastery of skills utilizing an array of methods.

Coursework for the MSN - Nursing Informatics Specialization is designed to help students build the foundation of insights and practical skills necessary to: 

  • Utilize informatics in healthcare settings to improve patient outcomes. 
  • Evaluate applications that acquire, process, and report clinical and financial information to enhance patient care. 
  • Demonstrate data management skills that target opportunities to improve patient safety. 
  • Develop a detailed project management plan for evaluating, contracting, and implementing new technologies to improve health outcomes and reduce risk

Curriculum

For term based programs, at no time may a student be registered for more than four courses concurrently in a 16-week period. Concurrent course registration cannot violate progression or prerequisite requirements. Concurrent course registration is subject to course availability.

Many courses in the Master of Science in Nursing program require the completion of Practice Experience (PE) hours. These hours are out-of-classroom activities replacing traditional schoolwork that students complete during their courses.

Master of Science in Nursing Term-Based Modality Core Courses


In the term-based modality, students complete traditional coursework in a structured 8-week course. Please review each course for prerequisite information.

Master of Science in Nursing Powered by SIMPath Core Courses Competency Based Modality


In the competence-based modality, students complete competencies within a 16-week time frame. Multiple competencies can be completed with the time frame. Each individual activity must be passed at acceptable or above to successfully pass the course, regardless of overall course average. Please review each course for prerequisite information.
