Master of Science in Counseling and Human Services

There are synchronous components to enhance student experience and learning. 

Students in the Master of Science in Counseling and Human Services program gain knowledge in the areas of prevention, remediation, group counseling and group work, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, testing, research and evaluation, and working with other professionals. Students gain the operational knowledge, analytical skills, and experience necessary to assess and conceptualize problems, identify and implement solutions. Students can choose a concentration in either Alcohol and Drug Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Two field experiences are required to fulfill requirements of this degree: HSV 593  and HSV 595 
HSV 593 Clinical Field Practicum I is the initial field experience. HSV 595 Counseling Internship is a comprehensive field experience. Each degree/or certificate has specific course requirements. Please check the specific field experience course for requirements applicable to your degree/or certificate area of study.

*Field Experiences are not interchangeable. HSV 593  and HSV 594  practicums have specific learning requirements that differ from those outlined in HSV 595  and HSV 596 . HSV 593  must be successfully completed prior to entry into the other field experiences. HSV 595  and HSV 596  cannot be substituted for HSV 593 .

Master of Science in Counseling and Human Services Program Outcomes

  1. Students will analyze the historical development of counseling and human services.
  2. Students will develop knowledge and theory of the interaction of human systems including individual, interpersonal, group, family, organizational, community, and societal.
  3. Students will analyze the scope of conditions that promote or inhibit human functioning.
  4. Students will develop an understanding of theories and/or techniques associated with multicultural competence in the field of counseling and human services.
  5. Students will construct knowledge and skills in direct service delivery and appropriate interventions.
  6. Students will develop learning experiences to build their interpersonal skills by developing knowledge, theory, and skills in the administrative aspects of the service delivery system.
  7. Students will evaluate values and attitudes and promote understanding of counseling and human services ethics and their application in practice.
  8. Students will develop an awareness of their own values, personalities, reaction patterns, interpersonal styles, and limitations.

Students wishing to become credentialed counselors will need to fulfill additional specific requirements. While the Master of Science in Counseling and Human Services is not designed to fulfill licensure requirements in an individual state, the program may be used to partially fulfill licensure requirements. Post University assists in researching and providing information regarding licensure; however, each state has different requirements for such licensure outside of the required education. Such state requirements may include licensure exams, background checks, certain work experience, and more. It is ultimately the responsibility of each student to manage their own licensure process and to ensure that all requirements are met in order for the student to obtain licensure. Post University does not speak on behalf of any licensing board or body and does not guarantee licensure. Requirements for licensure are subject to change without notice.

Master of Science in Counseling and Human Services Concentration Courses: 12 Credits


Total Program Credits: 39 Credits


*Upon direction from the Academic Department, students can take HSV 595  and HSV 596  for program field experience requirements. No other exceptions to the degree program are allowed for field experience.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration: 12 Required Credits
